The Throne

Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads. And under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature had two wings covering its body. And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings.

And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. Exekiel 1:22-28 ESV

God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!

God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted! Psalm 47:5-9 ESV

The people of Thailand love and respect their king very much, and he has elegant thrones and palaces to reflect his majesty. His grand palace in Bangkok is on an island called Ratanakosin, and there are several thrones in many beautiful buildings that he uses for different purposes there. One throne is shaped like a boat and covered with gold, and people bow to it as if it were an altar. There’s another golden throne in front of that that the king sits on. In another throne hall is a throne made of mother of pearl, and next to that is a bed that is also made of mother of pearl. The king might rest on that bed between receiving people and hearing their business. All of the buildings these different thrones are in are very elegant, with ornate roofs. The entire palace complex is meant to show the honor and glory of the King of Thailand.

Ezekiel’s vision included the throne of God himself, and everything in his vision showed God’s majesty and glory. The four living creatures were under God’s throne, and above them was something like a floor of pure crystal. The wings of these living creatures made the sound of rushing water, loud and roaring like the sound of an army. Ezekiel saw something like a throne above the crystal floor, blue like a sapphire, and the brightness all around the throne shown like a glorious rainbow. Ezekiel even saw someone sitting on this throne, a picture of the presence of God. God appeared to Ezekiel like a man, gleaming like polished metal and burning like fire. Ezekiel was so overwhelmed with this picture of the holy God that he fell on his face.

When sinful human people see the holy God, we can’t help but be very afraid. We know that we deserve God’s punishment for our sins, but God came to us in Jesus, a human person who showed God’s love and mercy. Jesus came to bring us back to our Heavenly Father, and he showed us what God was like through his teaching and his acts of kindness. He took our sins on himself and paid for them at the cross, and now we have forgiveness for all our sins every day. Because of Jesus, someday we will see God in his glory, and we won’t have to be afraid. We will be able to serve and praise and worship our holy God forever in his heavenly kingdom.

Dear Jesus, thank you for coming and bringing us back to the throne of our Heavenly Father. Amen
