King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you! It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.
How great are his signs,
how mighty his wonders!
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and his dominion endures from generation to generation.
I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me. So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. Daniel 4:1-7 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Hebrews 1:1-3a ESV
Many years ago when people wanted to communicate with each other over long distances, especially during a war, they might use semaphore towers. A semaphore tower was a tower with large blades, or arms, at the top, and these arms could be moved to different positions. Each different position could stand for a different letter or other character, which could be put together into a message. There were many different semaphore codes. When Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France, he used semaphore towers to send messages about the position of his enemies or the strategies he wanted to use in battle. The problem with semaphore towers is that anyone could see them, and if they understood the code they would be able to know the enemy’s secrets. Semaphore towers were eventually replaced by telegraph lines, and today there are even better ways to communicate over long distances.
God communicated with people in many different ways in the past. One way he talked to people was to give them dreams with messages for them to understand. People long ago thought that dreams were very important, and if they had a strange dream they might talk to wise people to try to understand what it meant. God had a message for Nebuchadnezzar, so he gave him a dream. Since Nebuchadnezzar couldn’t figure out what his dream meant, he called on his wise men to help him understand it. The king was going to learn that his dream was the Lord’s way of teaching Nebuchadnezzar to understand and give glory to the true God.
God has spoken to people in many different ways, but the last and best and most important way he’s communicated with us is through his Son, Jesus. Jesus came to this earth to teach us to know God, our Heavenly Father, and to give his life on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be God’s people. We don’t need to look for God in dreams or in secret messages. We have Jesus, and he has given us his Word, the Bible. The Bible gives us everything we need to know about God’s will and our life with Jesus, now and forever.
Dear Jesus, thank you for coming to us and teaching us to know God, and for dying for us to bring us back to our Heavenly Father. Amen.
