The sun shall be no more
your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
give you light;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun shall no more go down,
nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall be ended.
Your people shall all be righteous;
they shall possess the land forever,
the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
that I might be glorified.
The least one shall become a clan,
and the smallest one a mighty nation;
I am the Lord;
in its time I will hasten it. Isaiah 60:19-22 ESV
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Matthew 17:1-2 ESV
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4 ESV
I know of a Grandpa who loved his granddaughter very much. He thought of her as his sunshine, and when she walked into the room he would say, “You just walked into the room, and the sun came out!” Sometimes when we love someone, that person gives us so much happiness that they are like the sun to us. Being with them makes us feel the way we feel on a sunny day.
God spoke through the prophet Isaiah about a time in the future when his people would no longer need the sun or the moon to give them light. Instead, the Lord himself would be their everlasting light, and he would be their glory. The time for mourning and sadness would be gone because God would be with them. His people would be righteous and stay in their land forever, safe with the Lord, who would plant them there and make them strong and give them himself as their light and their sun.
God came to his people in Jesus, and one day three of Jesus’ disciples saw him shining like the sun. They saw God’s glory shining in him on that special day, and that was a peek at the glory was hidden in his human form. Jesus put aside his glory to live as a human person, and to die on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven, but now he is alive again, and someday we will see him in all his glory. He will shine like the sun, and since we have Jesus we won’t need the sun or the moon anymore. All our sadness and trouble will be gone, and we will live in his heavenly kingdom forever.
Dear Jesus, thank you for being our Savior and our sun. Amen.
