A Growing Kingdom of Peace

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV

Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to the royal son!
May he judge your people with righteousness,
and your poor with justice!
Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
and the hills, in righteousness!
May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy,
and crush the oppressor!

May they fear you while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth!
In his days may the righteous flourish,
and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth!
May desert tribes bow down before him,
and his enemies lick the dust!
May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands
render him tribute;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba
bring gifts!
May all kings fall down before him,
all nations serve him! Psalm 72:1-11 ESV

Victoria became the queen of Britain in 1837. She was queen at a time when Britain was very powerful. During her reign the British East India company transferred India to Britain’s power, which made the British empire expand. Some years after that Victoria was given a new title. She was not only a queen, but she was also called the Empress of India. This new name showed the new power her country had and the growth of the lands she ruled.

Isaiah talked about a child who would be born and would have many titles. These titles showed what kind of ruler this child would be. He would rule with righteousness and justice, and because of that he would be called Wonderful Counselor. He would be the Mighty God himself, and because he was there before creation and had made all things, he would be called the Everlasting Father. He would be a ruler of peace, and so his name would be Prince of Peace. The best thing about this wonderful child is that his kingdom and the peace he would bring would always be growing, but not through war or politics. This kingdom of peace would grow as more and more people were ruled by his ways and by his love.

The child that Isaiah talked about is Jesus. He is everything that Isaiah said he was. Jesus was born to us the first Christmas day, but he had always been God the Son, who made and held the world together. Jesus came to bring us peace with God by dying on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. He rules the hearts of all his people. We have been made right with God because he satisfied God’s justice, and we look forward to his heavenly kingdom. We share the good news of what Jesus has done for us, and see his kingdom of peace grow as people all around the world come to know him as their wonderful king.

Dear Jesus, thank you for bringing us into your kingdom and giving us peace with God, our Heavenly Father. Amen.
