God is Watching

The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
keeping watch on the evil and the good. Proverbs 15:3 ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV

Laura and Amy went to the department store to look around. They liked looking at the clothes and trying some of them on, even though they knew they couldn’t buy any. Then they went to the cosmetics area and looked at the perfumes and makeup. They wanted to have and use some of the makeup. So they slipped some eye shadow and blush into their pockets and walked out of the store without paying for it. They thought no one saw what they did, but someone saw.

Crystal and Megan put together a care package for their friend Lily, who was stuck at home with a broken leg. They knew how much she liked to draw, so they got her some artist paper and brand new colored pencils. They also got her a book with pictures by her favorite artists. They put the box together and left it on her porch when no one was looking. They wanted Lily to be surprised and not to know who sent her the care package. They thought no one saw what they did, but someone saw.

God sees and knows everything we do, even if no one else does. There’s no way to hide what we do from God. Even more than that, God sees what’s in our hearts. He knows why we do what we do, and if we have jealous or hateful thoughts and do good things to cover them up, we can’t hide that from God.

This is a very scary thought, because even when we do good things we often have mean or selfish feelings inside ourselves. We know that we can’t ever please God by ourselves because we are sinful. But God sent Jesus to save us. Jesus is the only person who pleased his Heavenly Father perfectly with his actions and with his heart. He took all our sins to the cross with him, even our most secret actions and feelings. Because of Jesus, all our sins are taken away, and God is pleased with us for Jesus’ sake. He sends us his Holy Spirit to help us do things that please him, and gives us new hearts that reflect his love.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus, our Savior, to die for our sins, even the ones that no one else can see. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
