Secret and Hidden

The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. Exodus 14:15-20 ESV

Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him.” I Corinthians 2:6-9 ESV

Have you ever heard of the hidden ball trick in baseball? It doesn’t happen very often, and it’s a very sneaky thing to do. Let’s say there’s a runner on second base. The shortstop or the second baseman will pretend he doesn’t have the ball. Maybe he will hide it in his armpit or pretend to throw it to the pitcher. Then, when the runner takes his lead off second base, the fielder will tag him out. The hidden ball trick works because the fielder hides the ball and keeps it a secret that he still has it.

God had plans to take out the Egyptian army once and for all, but he kept it a secret from them. God’s presence in the pillar of cloud moved behind all the people of Israel, standing between them and the Egyptian army. The cloud hid and protected Israel, and kept a secret what God was going to do for his people. The Egyptians didn’t see God divide the waters of the Red Sea. God kept his power hidden, and that was part of his plan to fool the Egyptians into marching to their deaths.

When God came in Jesus to defeat the forces of death and Satan once and for all, he also kept hidden what he was going to do. The devil and his demons thought they had Jesus beat when they worked through earthly rulers to put Jesus on the cross. They didn’t understand that Jesus’ death won the forgiveness of our sins, and that he would soon rise from the dead to win the victory over sin and death for his people for all time. God gives us life with him forever, and we can’t even being to imagine the joy we’ll have when we see him face to face in heaven.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to win the victory over sin and death for us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
