So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house. And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.” So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house, and said, “Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food. And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.” He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. Genesis 43:15-25 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17 ESV
Whenever my family goes out to dinner with my husband’s father, we have a great time together and a lot of good food. Everything is always very nice until the end of the meal. Then, there’s sometimes a fight. The server will bring the bill, and both my husband and his dad will try to grab it. Sometimes my husband’s dad will yell at my husband and tell him to give him the bill! He’s a good father, and he enjoys providing good things for his family. He doesn’t want his son to have to pay for the meal.
Joseph was the same way with his brothers. He was rich and powerful, and he wanted his brothers and their families to have everything they needed. He didn’t want them to have to pay for their food. So he paid for all of it himself. The brothers were worried and scared because they didn’t know who Joseph was or what had happened. They tried to explain things to Joseph’s steward. The steward gave God the credit for the money. He didn’t tell Joseph’s secret.
The steward was actually right in a way. Everything good that comes to us in our lives comes from God. He is our Heavenly Father, and he provides his children with everything we need. The best thing God provided for us is a Savior. When we were in trouble because of our sin, he sent Jesus to die on the cross for us. Jesus paid the price for our sins, a price we couldn’t have even begun to pay for ourselves. We don’t have to be worried or frightened to go to God and talk to him in prayer. In Jesus, God tells us to be at peace and not to be afraid. He has provided everything we need for us to be his children.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for all the good things you provide for us each day, and especially for Jesus, our Savior. In His Name, Amen.
