Impossible Dreams

They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” Genesis 18:9-15 ESV

And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31 ESV

For nothing will be impossible with God. Luke 1:37 ESV

When Wilbur and Orville Wright constructed the first airplane, not many people were interested. Not many people believed it could fly. They had to build their own engine, because no one else was willing to build one for such a foolish-sounding project. Very few newspapers covered the first flight, because flying the first airplane seemed like such an impossible feat. It took several years for the United States government to become interested in their project. It was hard to believe in something that seemed impossible.

When God repeated his promise of a son to Abraham and Sarah, Sarah laughed. The idea of a woman as old as her having a baby seemed to be an impossible dream. Years later Peter started the incredible project of walking on the water to meet Jesus. He also began to realize how impossible it was to do what he was doing. He started to doubt, and then he sank into the water.

The Lord scolded both Sarah and Peter for not believing in him. Our God is a God who can do impossible things. The most incredible thing God has done is to become a human being in Jesus. Jesus came to die for us so our sins could be forgiven. That weak and disobedient people like us are God’s children might seem like an impossible dream. But it’s true! God forgives us for doubting him, and hold and keeps us as his own.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to trust you to love us and hold us as your children for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
