Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes.
Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Job 2:1-10 ESV
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Psalm 13:1-2 ESV
Sarah, Monica, and Becca were good friends. But one day Monica got really mad at Becca. Becca had laughed at her new hairstyle, and that made Monica very angry. She wouldn’t speak to Becca. Sarah, however, wasn’t mad at Becca. She was still friends with her. That made Monica mad, too. She was mad at Sarah for not being mad at Becca with her.
Job’s wife was mad at God. She had lost all her children in one day. That would make any mother very, very sad. Then she saw her husband get really sick. Job had sores all over his body, and they hurt him badly. It made his wife sad and angry to see all this trouble. She was angry with God for letting this happen. It made her even more angry that Job still had faith in God. Sometimes when people get mad at God, they also get mad at people who love and trust him.
Because we are weak and sinful, we sometimes get angry with God. When that happens, God is patient with us and allows us to cry out all our hurts to him. He corrects our sin and forgives us. We can be sure he forgives us because he sent Jesus. Jesus took all our sins to the cross with him. That took God’s anger away from us forever. God comforts our anger and sadness and helps us go on trusting him.
Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us for not trusting in you when we have troubles. Thank you for forgiving all our sins for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
