The First Marriage

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:18-24 ESV

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:25-27

In Bible times, and even in some places today, when a man gets married, he or his family has to pay a bride price. The groom or his family pays the bride’s family some money or gives some property or maybe some cattle or sheep. It might be very costly for a man to get married if the bride price is high.

When God made Adam, he saw that he needed a wife. It was not good for Adam to be alone. None of the animals could give Adam the love and friendship he needed. All of the animals had mates, but not the man. So God made a wife for Adam. In a way, Adam had to pay a bride price. He didn’t have to pay money or land or animals. He had to give up part of himself. This meant that his wife was so close to him that she was part of who he was. This is the way God meant marriage to be.

Because of sin, marriage isn’t always the way God meant it to be. But Jesus gives us a picture of God’s perfect marriage. All of God’s people together are called the Church, and the Church is sometimes called Jesus’ bride. Jesus loved all his people so much that he paid the highest bride price possible. He gave his life on the cross to win his bride for himself. Jesus’ love for his Church is the best love story in the world!

Dear Jesus, thank you for loving me and all your people so much that you died on the cross so we could belong to you. Amen.
